Abstract

Immunosuppression associated with HIV increases the risk of several cancers, most notably, Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and cervical cancer. These cancers are common causes of complications and death among individuals with HIV infection. Treatment of these conditions requires specific expertise since the benefit of tumor-directed therapy has to be assessed against the risk of increased treatment-related toxicity due to the underlying viral infection and its associated immunosuppressive state. The medical oncology service supports the clinical activities of the HIV-Associated Malignancies Branch (HAMB), which has a wide portfolio of clinical trials for patients with HIV-associated malignancies.
