Abstract

Since its formation, the Viral Oncology Section has conducted research on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, in addition to our studies on HIV-associated malignancies. The studies on HIV have focused on the HIV protease and the GagPol protease precursor. We found that the protease inhibitor GRL-142 also binds to and impairs HIV-1 integrase nuclear localization signal and potently suppresses highly INSTI-resistant HIV-1 variants. We have been conducting a trial of the anti-PD-L1 drug pembrolizumab and its effect on the HIV reservoir. In collaboration with Dr. Maldarelli in NCI, we have been studying the oligoclonal nature of HIV integration in patients on long-term anti-HIV therapy. Also, in collaboration with T.W. Chun and colleagues in NIAID, we have found that HIV in a multidrug resistant patient could be successfully treated with anti-CD4 domain 1 antibody and lenacapavir.
