Abstract
Our recruitment for our clinical trial on the effect of omega-7 fatty acid supplementation on cardiovascular biomarkers was delayed because we changed the entry criteria to enter more patients with hypertriglyceridemia. We plan to complete the study in the following year. We completed but have not published a study of VLCPUFA supplementation in obese mice. It not only improved visual function, as we previously observed in animal studies, and hence could be a potential new treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration, but it also showed favorable cardiometabolic effects on plasma lipid levels and on insulin sensitivity. We received a bench-to-bedside grant from the NIH to investigate in a clinical trial the potential value of VLCPUFA supplementation and should be able to submit a clinical protocol to the central NIH IRB before end of the fiscal year.
