Abstract

The lymphatic system is a crucial, though often underrecognized, part of human biology. It acts as both a drainage network and an immune highway, moving fluid from tissues back into the bloodstream while also transporting immune cells and capturing pathogens for elimination. Lymph forms in the body’s tissues when excess fluid escapes from blood vessels and enters lymphatic vessels, which channel it through a series of lymph nodes before returning it to circulation. These lymph nodes serve as key immune outposts, where the body detects and responds to infections and physiological perturbations. Any pathogen that breaches tissue barriers will encounter this system, making lymphatic transport a first line of defense against disease. When lymph flow is disrupted, the consequences can be wide-ranging: immune surveillance weakens, swelling and tissue damage can occur, and chronic inflammation may develop. Such dysfunction is not only a concern after lymph node removal in cancer treatment but is increasingly recognized in conditions such as obesity and metabolic disease, where lymphatic vessels can become leaky or impaired. These changes may worsen inflammation, alter fat metabolism, and contribute to the progression of chronic illness. Despite its central role in maintaining fluid balance, supporting immunity, and influencing metabolic health, the lymphatic system remains far less understood than the cardiovascular or nervous systems. This knowledge gap is due in part to the technical challenges of visualizing lymphatic vessels deep within the body, though advances in imaging are beginning to open new opportunities for study. Better understanding how the lymphatic system functions holds promise for improving health in fields ranging from infectious disease to cancer, cardiovascular health, and metabolic disorders.
