Abstract

The CMPB Central Pathology Core Laboratories continued to provide critical pathology support services, collaboration, and consultation for numerous NIEHS DTT and DIR research laboratories. Over the past year, collaborative and support oriented work has had a significant impact on a spectrum of research programs involved in studying and understanding a variety of diseases and disease processes, e.g., cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, obesity, Type II diabetes ,inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases, renal disease, gene expression and gene regulation, axial skeletal development, carcinogenesis, and transgenerational effects of diet restriction. The scope of pathology support provided for research programs has remained consistent across all Core Laboratories, including collaborations and consultations with technical staff regarding appropriate methods and procedures, and scientifically with CMPB pathologists. Core staff have worked with investigators to develop and establish specialized techniques and protocols for a variety of applications. For example, Core staff have partnered with the NIEHS IT group to establish the infrastructure for performing digital imaging, image analysis and artificial intelligence. Core staff have also partnered with NIEHS IT to improve, upgrade, and modernize the existing Laboratory Inventory Management System (Core Laboratory Tracking Application) used to manage and track submissions. Additionally, the Cores have been involved in retrospective studies aimed at elucidating the pathogenesis of variety of proliferative non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions using archived materials from the DTT short term and long-term bioassays.
