Abstract
The Space Management Team within the Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) works to remodel and update space within the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). The DIR has over 75 laboratories, administrative offices, and core facilities. Laboratories with common intellectual and scientific interests were reorganized and have been co-located in six divisions on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Complementing the physical proximity of laboratories are affinity groups (AG) of scientists with shared research interests. The facilities allow for AGs to promote scientific exchange, collaborations, and the formation of new multidisciplinary teams to address new research ideas in a fluid and dynamic manner. Space is modified accordingly when a new hire is brought on-board. The Space Management Team works closely with the Investigator to meet the needs of the science. As scientific needs and facilities change, renovations and/or laboratory moves can become necessary. When an Investigator leaves the DIR, the Space Management Team works to close out the laboratory according to the NIH rules and regulations. A space database is maintained to document all the space with the DIR as well as detailed space maps. This is shared with all the Investigators.
