Abstract

CANCER CENTER ADMINISTRATION: PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Wilmot Cancer Institute (Wilmot) Administration is the principal organizational component that centrally operationalizes and promotes Wilmot’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities by providing the overall planning and management of administrative services to Wilmot’s 115 members. Associate Director for Administration and Finance Brian J. Martin, MPA, leads Administration, and reports directly to Wilmot Director Jonathan W. Friedberg, MD, MMSc (CM). Martin, in collaboration with a team of highly qualified and experienced individuals, provide the administrative and financial support necessary to ensure efficient and effective operations, including all Wilmot and CCSG related activities. Essential Administration functions include: (1) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) management, reporting, and application processes; (2) oversight and management of shared resources; (3) grant pre- and post-award administration and development; (4) human resources, including faculty recruitment, retention, and promotions; (5) fiscal oversight of all Wilmot functions, ensuring cohesiveness and alignment of Wilmot’s strategic priorities; (6) outreach and information dissemination; (7) information technology; (8) strategic planning and evaluation activities; (9) management and oversight of pilot project solicitations; and (10) space management. In recent years, Wilmot Administration has accomplished a number of notable milestones, including organizing and developing Wilmot’s 2023-2028 strategic planning initiative, coordinating the recruitment of 30 new faculty, strengthening Wilmot’s administrative structure through recruitment of experienced senior leaders, facilitating implementation of policies and processes for effective CCSG management, and restructuring and expanding CTO and information technology services. Wilmot Administration is involved in key initiatives at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) that add value to the CCSG. In response to Wilmot’s needs, Martin partnered with the URMC Office of Clinical Research to bring a new management system to more efficiently conduct clinical trials. He also serves as a member on key committees that drive medical center policies with respect to information technology, research administration, compliance activities, and space planning. Finally, Wilmot Administration has built, enhanced, and strengthened its capabilities to fully support the CCSG application process and CCSG operations. These capabilities include: the annual research performance progress report; external advisory board meeting planning and execution; evaluation; shared resource management support; membership management; space management; policy development and management; pilot award solicitation, review, and monitoring; research grant administration; and management of philanthropic and institutional funds. Moving forward, Administration is well positioned to foster and support implementation and tracking of the Wilmot Strategic Plan, and enhance growth and expansion through recruitment.
