Abstract

The recruitment core (RC) aligns with the overall goals of the FAMU Center to continue building on and enhancing faculty competitiveness in variability in disease outcomes among different populations, conducting research, and attracting significant extramural funding. The University is committed to providing funds for two state-line positions to hire mid- to senior-career faculty members with active or recently expired NIH grants (i.e., R-series, P-series, and/or U-series awards) or other federal or non-federal awards to assist in building research capacity. In line with FAMU Strategic Priority 2: goals 3 and 4, these newly hired faculty members will establish intra-, inter-, and multidisciplinary research collaborations, enhance the research skills and capabilities of investigators and students, and generate extramural funding. This application targets two research areas; one recruited faculty member will have expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and bioinformatics. By recruiting scholars with specialized skills in omics, drug discovery, and bioinformatics, we aim to cultivate an environment that fosters innovative research. This will enable us to create new community engagement strategies that augment our contributions to the scientific community. The other recruited scholar will possess expertise in cancer biology, with a focus on oncogenic gene dysregulation and carcinogenesis. Adding a scientist with these skills and experience will accentuate the existing expertise of FAMU faculty engaging in cancer research. Thus, recruiting these faculty members will bolster the Center and the University's research capabilities while fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations. In recruiting these scholars, advertisements will be disseminated to national venues such as Science Magazine and the Chronicle of Higher Education, as well as local platforms. A search committee will evaluate the applications, and selected candidates will be invited for an interview. Once the best candidates are chosen for the positions, offer letters will be sent to the selected candidates with a competitive salary offer and a comprehensive start-up package. The FAMU provost's office has committed to offering a competitive salary and benefits package. Additionally, the provost's office will provide the selected faculty members with a competitive start-up package, supplementing the package of $250,000. The start-up package will include relocation expenses, attractive laboratory and office space, and access to core research facilities. Additionally, funds will be allocated for a postdoctoral research associate, small equipment, travel to research conferences, and lab supplies to support the establishment of a successful research program at FAMU. Additionally, the hired faculty will be assigned a minimum teaching and service workload and offered various professional development and leadership training opportunities.
