Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The purpose of this administrative supplement is to support Dr. Biernesser’s transition from a mentored career development K23 award to research independence in the midst of her critical life event. This supplement support will help ensure continuity of Dr. Biernesser’s research during this important juncture in her career by providing funds to support her research staff. Together with funds from the parent award, this additional staff support will allow for increased effort toward recruitment, data collection, and data management that is needed following her planned time off and amidst increasing caregiver responsibilities. This extra support is especially important for Dr. Biernesser’s project, which involves a clinical trial that requires critical support from key staff members to move forward. This supplement support would come during a sensitive time in Dr. Biernesser’s career and thus would have a meaningful influence on her retention in biomedical research and transition to full research independence. Indeed, she will be prepared to submit her first applications for independent research funding (e.g., R01) during the supplement period. Dr. Biernesser will benefit from the additional support to achieve the needed sample for the study and prepare the data for forthcoming manuscript submissions, essential steps for successful future grant submissions and the transition to an independent research career.
