Abstract

The research programs of the NIEHS and NTP generate large volumes of data and biological and environmental specimens that require safe, secure, short- and long-term management and storage under specific environmental conditions. The collections comprise a variety of materials, and depending on the type of study, the quantities of study materials range from several hundred items to several millions. Examples include— • Analog records: temporary hard copy paper or paper generated prior to digital options, electronic data media, film slides, microfiche, and digital image files, etc.; • Biological samples: formalin fixed, wet-tissue and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks; histological glass slides, frozen tissues, blood and blood fractions, RNA and DNA, secreta and excreta, hair and nails, etc.; • Environmental samples: Dust, water, soil, nutrition sources, etc. The contract provides for a state-of-the-art Archive facility to store, maintain and secure these records and samples under the appropriate environmental conditions.
