Abstract

The mission of the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium is to unite innovative research and compassionate care to prevent and eliminate cancer and related diseases. The Consortium is driven by the urgency of its patients, the hope of its community, and a passion for discovery to pursue scientific breakthroughs and healthier lives for every person in every community. To achieve this mission, Consortium leadership has intentionally developed nine highly integrated Research Programs that collaborate with offices overseeing critical overarching themes (i.e., Cancer Research Training & Education, Community Outreach & Engagement) and that are supported by effective infrastructure including Shared Resources, Clinical Research Support, and Administration. The refreshed 2023-2027 Consortium Strategic Plan brings all of these elements together in a concerted effort and makes our consortium cancer center greater than the sum of its parts. To continue on a trajectory to prevent and eliminate cancer and related diseases, the Strategic Plan is organized around three priorities, each with a number of related initiatives that are engaged by every part of the Consortium, which serve as our specific aims: 1) Lead in Scientific Discovery and Research Innovation; 2) Foster Collaboration with Patients and Communities, and 3) Strengthen the Foundation of Research and Care. Since the beginning of the current cycle, Consortium membership has grown by over 160 members; in FY2023, cancer- relevant funding, excluding the CCSG and training projects, was at $238.4M (direct costs), of which $75.8M was from the NCI; interventional trials had 3,138 accruals while non-interventional trials had 4,891 accruals; and between FY2020-23, members have authored more than 6,980 cancer-related publications, with 13% in journals with impact factors >20.
