Abstract

EXTERNAL NETWORK CORE ON AGING SGM POPULATIONS: REVISED PROJECT SUMMARY/ ABSTRACT Sexual minority (SM) populations SM face substantial health disadvantages as they age—with greater risk of physical, psychological, and cognitive health decline. However, most prior research on SMSM populations has focused on younger populations. To further advance research on aging sexual minority populations, we propose a new External Network Core on Aging SM Populations to create a scientific community that generates much-needed data and research on health risks and resilience in SM populations. The Network Core will advance population-based science in this area by pursuing three specific aims. Aim 1 is to build a collaborative, interdisciplinary national network of population scientists to advance research on aging in SM populations through activities including conferences, speakers, and panels. Aim 2 is to develop and share data and analytic resources on aging SM populations through informational and training webinars on specific datasets and data collection strategies. Aim 3 is to seed new lines of population-based research on SM aging through pilot project awards to emerging scholars. Knowledge and data remain sorely lacking about the unique experiences of aging in SM populations and how those experiences accumulate over the life course to influence cognitive and physical health outcomes. The proposed Network Core will address this significant gap and support CAPS’s overall mission to advance research on health disparities across the Center’s research themes. The Network Core will work closely with the Administrative and Research Support Core to organize events and support grant applications based on Network pilot projects, with the Program Development and Pilot Core to support the work of emerging scholars who receive pilot project awards, and with the Communication and Dissemination Core to grow the network of scholars and to showcase and share new data and findings on aging in SM populations. The infrastructure support provided by CAPS’s other cores, coupled with the Center’s faculty expertise on SM populations, positions the External Network Core on Aging SM Populations to make significant inroads on expanding understanding of a neglected health disparity population with pressing public health needs.
