Abstract
PROJECT ABSTRACT (External Research Resources Core) The External Research Resources Core (ERRC) will support the overarching CAPRA objective to accelerate and expand multidisciplinary population-based AD/ADRD research by the development of robust research resources that are broadly available to the external research community. This core will be dedicated to advancing large population-based research integrating a variety of rich secondary data sources in order to shed light on the complex and intertwined social, economic, and health systems effects of AD/ADRD. AD/ADRD research often takes advantage of the growing collection and greater availability of administrative (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid) and population-based survey data (e.g., the Health and Retirement Study) on cognitive function, and other novel data sources. While these data are becoming more available, their complexity and the speed at which AD/ADRD research is moving create challenges for using them to address important and timely questions. Building on CAPRAâs prior work, we will continue to create publicly available analytic tools and aggregated datasets to lower barriers to use and support secondary data research in AD/ADRD. In this cycle, we will leverage the NIA Data LINKAGE Program to develop and test performance of algorithms needed for AD/ADRD research validated against national surveys with objective cognitive data and to develop a new dataset that will allow study of transitions across community- and facility-based long term care settings. We also plan to study trends in diagnosis and management of AD/ADRD across populations using national administrative data. This research will provide publicly shareable aggregated data to which we will merge sociodemographic, health system, and environmental measures that investigators can use to test preliminary associations, generate needed covariates, or allow researchers to identify specific regions for primary data collection studies that capture differences across populations. We make our analytic tools (e.g., programming script) publicly available to improve functional accessibility of AD/ADRD healthcare administrative and survey data for other investigators. We will use the novel AD/ADRD datasets created in CAPRA to write Data Brief publications for broad dissemination. In summary, the ERRC will support and foster population-based AD/ADRD research by conducting studies of algorithms and populations trends and the creation and dissemination of research tools and high-quality data that incorporate social factors important to patients living with AD/ADRD. In this way, the ERRC serves the overarching CAPRA goal of being a national resource by providing trusted, robust AD/ADRD tools and data to the external research community.
