Abstract
ABSTRACT This application requests partial funding for the 2025 Pittsburgh Lung Conference (PILC) with specific focus for on âThe Science of Medicine: Developing the Next Generation of Physician Scientistsâ to be held on September 18-19, 2025, University Club, Pittsburgh, PA. The PILC has been a leading meeting in Pulmonary Medicine for more than 20 years. With a focus on the presentation of cutting-edge topics in clinical, translational, and basic research, the PILC brings together leaders from institutions across the country and internationally to participate in thematic discussion and foster collaboration. For 2025, we will specifically focus the meeting on the Next Generation of Physician Scientist Leaders. A major focus of the conference is on early career physician-scientist development and will incorporate presentations, networking events, and career development workshops highlighting 8 important topics related to becoming a successful physician-scientist. This will be combined with state of the art sessions on Precision Medicine, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Harnessing the Immune System to Treat Disease, and Changing Patient Outcomes through Implementation Science. Speakers will be medical professionals (MDs and MD-PhDs) who are prominent physician scientists from leading academic institutions nationally and internationally. Each of the four sessions will feature presentations from physician scientists trainee and early career faculty. We aim to attract Ph.D trainees and investigators who are at the front lines of Science and Medicine to foster interdisciplinary research. We propose the following Aims: (1) To promote the interaction of students, clinical trainees, post-doctoral trainees, and early career faculty with established investigators. Selected travel awards will be targeted to these participants. As we are one of the NHLBI R38 and T32 sites, we will connect with other R38s and T32s to encourage participation of trainees and PIs. (2) To provide an inclusive, collaborative environment for basic, translational, and clinical researchers to disseminate and discuss recent cutting-edge scientific advances that impacts science and medicine. The organizers have extensive experience in conference organization and physician scientist training that will ensure a successful meeting to attract the top trainees and early faculty in the field focused on the main identified cross- collaborative topics.
