Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY – Recruitment Core The vision of RCMI@Morgan is to become nationally recognized for excellence in innovative research that addresses health disparities issues of concern to minority and underrepresented communities in the city of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. National Statistics indicate that these population groups suffer disproportionately from the incidence and prevalence of health disparity diseases such as HIV/AIDS, COVID- cancer, diabetes, neuro-degenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and other chronic conditions. During the current grant cycle, RCMI@Morgan has significantly contributed to advancing the science of health disparities and training the next generation of biomedical and health disparities researchers. Hence, the overarching goal of RCMI@Morgan is to become a significant player in conducting health disparity research of urban significance. As a major component of RCMI@Morgan, the Recruitment Core is designed to increase the capacity of the Center to conduct innovative health disparities research by hiring a senior/mid-level biomedical scientist who has a track record of successful independent grants from NIH. The Specific Aim of the Recruitment Core is to hire an accomplished biomedical scientist who has a track-record of successful grantsmanship and expertise in health disparities research, to strengthen the RCMI@Morgan’s research ecosystem, mentor early- stage investigators, and contribute significantly to the overall success of the Center. Hiring a magnet investigator with experience and expertise in health disparities research will further strengthen our biomedical research environment and enhance the capacity of MSU to conduct innovative research aimed at improving minority health and reducing/or eliminating health disparities. We anticipate hiring a senior/mid-level scientist whose research experience and expertise align very well with the biomedical research focus of RCMI@Morgan. He/she will have primary responsibilities to: 1) Develop and implement a productive research program in his/her specific area of health disparities research; and 2) Coordinate the mentoring plan and mentor early stage investigators to facilitate their transition to biomedical research independence. Hence, he/she will also participate in biomedical research networking and team science, professional development workshops, and other strategic activities to enhance the biomedical research ecosystem of RCMI@Morgan.
