Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY - DISSEMINATION & POLICY CORE The overall aim of our National Center of Excellence is to develop and disseminate health economics research on healthcare utilization, health outcomes, and health-related behaviors that informs SUD treatment decision making and HCV and HIV care for people who use drugs. In this renewal, we will emphasize financial sustainability, advanced methods, and knowledge translation, as well as development of the next generation of rigorous researchers in our field. The Dissemination & Policy Core will address Center Aim 3 by continuing to evolve as a knowledge broker and capacity builder, connecting researchers and stakeholders to translate rigorous evidence into effective practice, and bring new expertise in dissemination science to the Core. Since CHERISH was established in 2015, health economics research to inform decision makers and the public about care for SUD and for HCV/HIV among people who use drugs has increased in importance. SUD has claimed the attention of mass media, but large gaps remain in translation and use of evidence to address the SUD-HCV-HIV syndemic. Decision making, financing, overdose prevention, and care remain disconnected from research that informs best practices. Conversely, for decision making and public health impact, health economics research on costs, tradeoffs, and sustainability of best practices must address stakeholdersâ priorities. Finally, findings must be communicated to the right audience, in the right format, at the right time. The Dissemination & Policy Core focuses on productive and reciprocal engagement of researchers, decision makers, and stakeholders. The Dissemination & Policy Core has the following specific aims:1) to engage substance use and HCV/HIV stakeholders and health economics researchers in information exchange and train and support researchers in translating evidence for SUD and HCV/HIV decision makers; and 2) to conduct dissemination research to inform strategies that improve knowledge translation and use of SUD economic evidence among decision makers. Our continued affiliation with the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI) at the University of Pennsylvania brings deep expertise in translation and dissemination of health economics research and the ability to engage a range of stakeholders and researchers through forums and channels that promote information exchange while leveraging clinical and lived experience with SUD, HCV, and HIV. We will take advantage of LDIâs expertise in using virtual forums to engage decision makers, training researchers to communicate with non-expert audiences, and creating online content that promotes interaction between decision makers and researchers. Simultaneously, our research activities will build capacity for novel approaches that CHERISH investigators, trainees, and Research Affiliates can use to disseminate research findings, which, in turn, will inform future knowledge translation and training activities.
