Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY - ADMINISTRATIVE CORE The overall aim of our National Center of Excellence is to develop and disseminate health economics research on healthcare utilization, health outcomes, and health-related behaviors that informs substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and HCV and HIV care for people who use drugs. In this renewal, we will emphasize financial sustainability, advanced methods, and knowledge translation as well as development of the next generation of researchers in our field. The Center brings new multi-disciplinary expertise and perspectives to groundbreaking NIH-funded research projects to ensure “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The multi-institutional nature of our Center is both innovative and central to our scientific success. The Administrative Core supports CHERISH Cores through an integrated management approach across locations and areas of expertise, including a detailed plan for frequent in-person and web-based interactions and a rigorous approach to self-evaluation. Since 2015, we have been notably effective in using technology-based platforms to maintain virtual proximity and encourage fertile informal interactions among investigators and staff across the Center. The Administrative Core has the following Specific Aims: 1) to provide the leadership, management, and support structure that ensures productive cross-institutional and cross-Core coordination and evaluation of Center activities; 2) to provide administrative and logistical support for pilot grant award, training, and mentorship activities; 3) to provide administrative and communications support that positions CHERISH as a national resource for health economics research on care for SUD and HCV/HIV among people who use substances. In this renewal, the Administrative Core will coordinate the Consultation Service and Research Affiliates Program to optimize cross-Core opportunities for these initiatives and continue to expand their national reach. The Consultation Service links researchers from around the US to CHERISH Core expertise. The Research Affiliates Program provides a virtual national community of substance use and HCV/HIV health economics and health services researchers, who otherwise might work in more “siloed” environments. The Administrative Core uses web technologies that have now become commonplace to support formal and informal interactions that cross locations and disciplines. These technology-based approaches supplement but do not replace frequent face-to-face interactions throughout the year. We use an administrative tracking system to monitor and evaluate the Center’s progress towards meeting its objectives. These activities will continue to support a highly productive and interactive environment that will develop a new generation of investigators with the skills needed to lead SUD health economics research.
