Abstract

SUMMARY – RESOURCE CORE 1 (RC1), ADVANCED GEROTHERAPEUTICS CORE Advancements in aging biology have laid the foundation for gerotherapeutics aimed at extending healthspan and lifespan by addressing age-induced diseases. These advances follow the geroscience hypothesis, which posits that modulating aging mechanisms can prevent or delay chronic diseases. Clinical trials are testing interventions like FDA-approved drugs and nutraceuticals that target aging hallmarks, including senescence and inflammation. However, important gaps remain, such as identifying new gerotherapeutics and predictive biomarkers, and translating aging biology insights into effective therapies for older adults. To address these gaps, the Advanced Gerotherapeutics Core (RC1) of the Los Angeles Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (LA OAIC) will support this translational effort by offering expertise, infrastructure, and technical assistance for aging-related studies. The Specific Aims of RC1 are to: 1) Support broad research on fundamental aging biology to identify novel molecular targets and promote early-phase development of advanced gerotherapeutics; 2) Catalyze identification of molecular targets and development of advanced gerotherapeutics, and; 3) Provide interdisciplinary training in aging biology and gerotherapeutic development for early-stage investigators. RC1 members are renowned experts in geroscience and drug development. Core leaders have made transformative discoveries in aging biology and geroscience, mentored numerous early-stage investigators who have built their own geroscience programs, and assisted many scientists around the world with advancing their research. The Core's ultimate goal is to enhance collaboration and promote the translation of research into clinical trials, advancing treatments that improve the health and promote independence of older adults. Over its first year, RC1 will support 11 LA OAIC-funded projects and 12 externally-funded projects to drive these efforts forward.
