Abstract

Effective administration of a research infrastructure is essential for the successful development of Clinical and Translational Research in Puerto Rico that will advance the knowledge of prevalent diseases in our population. With its proven record of accomplishments, the Alliance of Clinical and Translational Research (Alliance) administrative core is strategically positioned to accomplish this during a new funding cycle. During its initial funding period, the Administrative Core of the Alliance successfully implemented effective management strategies that resulted in 405 supported studies, 220 published articles and $174.9 million obtained in external funding, linked to Alliance support. The overall goal of the Administrative Core is to support C&T research that will help advance knowledge in the specific health challenges of the Puerto Rican and mainland USA population. The specific objective is to provide the administrative infrastructure that will support effective management, supervision, and coordination of the entire range of activities across all three partner institutions and affiliates and ensure that the Alliance milestones are effectively and efficiently met. During this next funding cycle we will accomplish these goals and objectives through three Specific aims: 1) Continue to provide an integrated organizational structure, leadership, and advisory support system to effectively supervise, coordinate, and monitor progress, and increase clinical trials capacity and capabilities; 2) Strengthen the financial oversight structure that will ensure efficient distribution and utilization of the Alliance financial resources; 3) Implement a rigorous and well-defined evaluation plan for continuous quality improvement, and monitoring progress toward the Alliance IdeA CTR-N goals, innovation, and impact. For this renewal we are presenting a comprehensive governance plan that will ensure seamless integration and representation of partner institutions and new affiliates. It is proposing innovative management strategies to effectively navigate and leverage the available resources, to incorporate new sources of expertise from stakeholders, and to ensure effective communication with investigators, community, and the administrative leadership. It is also proposing effective tracking and evaluation strategies that will ensure effective monitoring of activities and distribution of resources. The Alliance Administrative Core will leverage the knowledge and experience of research leaders across all three partner institutions that will improve and expand the research infrastructure, increase productivity and external funding, resulting in improved health of the Puerto Rico and mainland population.
