Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY - PROTOTYPE CONSTRUCTION CORE (PCC) The NEI sponsored research of investigators at the Stein Eye Institute (SEI) calls for the development and modification of innovative spectroscopic, electrophysiological, optical and mechanical systems. To support these efforts, a state-of-the-art computer numerical controlled (CNC) fabrication and engineering facility has been established at the SEI. This facility enables the construction of novel devices and instruments that lead NEI investigators into novel research areas. This facility is supported by the Prototype Construction Core (PCC) Module of this core grant, and is one of the most heavily subscribed. The PCC module has these notable features: A. The facility continues to be operated by a formally trained CNC mechanician with a secondary degree in electronics. B. Access is provided to NEI grant holders throughout the UCLA campus who have need for unique prototypes for research. C. The facility provides training for research personnel unfamiliar with computer aided design and fabrication. D. The PCC provides project prioritization to streamline efficiency in fabrication, considering project urgency. E. The PCC facilitates synergistic use of the core components. F. The PCC fosters collaborative relationships, particularly between translational and basic research These features will be discussed in detail in our Research Strategy.
