Abstract

The Career Enhancement Program (CEP) of the PeRsonalized Outreach and Multifaceted Interventions for Screening Enhancement (PROMISE) for Anal and Cervical Cancer Prevention & Treatment Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) will leverage institutional infrastructure and the rich research environments at the University of Miami (UM), Emory University (EU), and Morehouse School of Medicine (Morehouse) to provide cancer translational research career development for faculty. The PROMISE SPORE will leverage NIH-funded centers and institutes including, but not limited to, NCI Cancer Center Support Grant components at EU Winship Cancer Institute and UM Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The long-term goal is to expand the pool of scientists to engage in impactful research on cervical cancer (CC), anal cancer (AC) and other diseases, which incidence and mortality rates vary significantly across population groups in the US and globally. The CEP awardees will gain access to SPORE shared resources (community outreach and engagement, biostatistics and bioinformatics, and biospecimen and pathology) and a mentorship team to support and advance their careers. The PROMISE SPORE will recruit and fund new early-, mid-career investigators or established investigators who are new to translational cancer research to conduct impactful, innovative AC and CC research and provide comprehensive mentorship and training in translational AC and CC research in Black and Hispanic individuals. The PROMISE SPORE CEP aims to develop and sustain the cancer research workforce to conduct translational research that is beneficial and impactful to individuals at risk of and/or diagnosed with anal and cervical malignancies and are disproportionally affected by CC and AC.
