Abstract

Project Summary/Abstract The overarching goal of the Administrative Core of the Center for Collaboration on Climate and Community for Health (C4Health) is to transform the Center’s capacity to contribute rigorous research on health effects of extreme weather affecting the Midwest and Appalachia. This P20 mechanism provides the means to create the collaborative, transdisciplinary infrastructure that enables innovative, translational research to promote and protect the health of communities in the face of extreme heat and other extreme weather events. C4Health is particularly focused on residents with high levels of exposure to extreme heat, such as first responders and outdoor workers, or heightened physiological response to extreme heat, such as pregnant women, young children, and older adults. The aims of the Administrative Core are to: Aim 1. Coordinate and integrate C4Health components and activities, and actively communicate with advisory boards, members, partners, and NIH. Towards this aim, the administrative core will establish the overall center structure, leadership and partnerships and replenish these as needed; convene meetings and coordinate the C4Health Leadership Team and advisory boards, with timely communication of minutes to the respective stakeholders; and coordinate the work of our research teams and partners. Aim 2. Lead the growth and development of the C4Health research center by recruiting members and partners, enable collaborations, and develop our capacity for sustainability. Towards this aim, the core will cultivate center membership and maintain an accessible database to enable communication among center members and partners; support member capacity for transformative research on the impact of extreme weather on health through information-sharing and active development of collaborations; and develop and enact a plan for center development and sustainability that addresses what our center aims to achieve by the end of P20 support to achieve long-term success and funding. Aim 3. Provide effective management of our center, including utilization of funds, monitor and enable productivity, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Towards this aim, the core will oversee the center budget and review expenditure of funds monthly, assuring the timely and appropriate expenditure of these funds, identifying additional resource needs; enact center-wide data management and resource sharing plans; assure regulatory compliance; and monitor center productivity in terms of publications, grants submitted and awarded, and meeting evaluation milestones. The Administrative Core is committed to stewardship of NIH and institutional resources to foster an environment that contributes to high-impact research on extreme weather-related health effects, while testing promising strategies to reduce health risks. The Administrative Core also supports the Research Project and the other cores in community outreach, workforce development and pilot projects. The research environment at our institution is exceptional and highly conducive to the development of team science and groundbreaking discoveries.
