Abstract
It is challenging to build successful research collaborations - particularly when working across institutions and with early-stage investigators (ESIs). To overcome these challenges, we developed the Capacity Building Core. The Core's goal is to build joint collaborations between City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center (CoHCCC) and University of California, Riverside (UCR) investigators. To build CoH-UCR collaborations, the Core provides structured mentorship for UCR investigators (ideally ESIs), and financial and Core resources. Our ultimate goal is to build sustaining CoH-UCR collaborations that 1) increase UCR capacity for drug development and clinical trials, and 2) result in independent NIH-funding. The Core will offer Mini-Pilots - $100K/year. Mini-Pilots will be 1) crafted as a partnership between a senior CoH researcher and a UCR investigator (preferably an ESI) and 2) strengthened by small-group instruction in grant writing and a tailored 1:1 discussion of available CoHCCC resources. Aim 1 will help UCR investigators identify CoH senior research partners and CoH translational resources - including tissue banks, drug development resources, and on-going clinical trials. Aim 2 will provide tailored assistance for UCR investigators, particularly ESIs. Aim 3 will implement Mini-Pilots and evaluate deliverables.
