Abstract

Emory Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) ABSTRACT Despite the growing number of evidence-based cancer prevention and control interventions and strategies to reduce the burden of cancer, most are not well adopted in local clinical or community settings. The Emory CPCRN will increase the translation of cancer and lung cancer screening (LCS) evidence into local communities. Wider use of effective interventions can significantly reduce cancer morbidity and mortality. The Emory CPCRN has 5 inter-related aims and will: Aim 1. Collaborate with other CPCRN centers to advance the mission of the CPCRN; Aim 2. Build the capacity of public health agencies, community-based organizations, and cancer control research and practice networks to adopt and implement evidence-based strategies; Aim 3a. Conduct a scoping review of lung cancer screening tools to measure eligibility for lung cancer screening; Aim 3b. Conduct a systematic review of interventions to promote lung cancer screening in the United States to inform intervention development; Aim 4a. Conduct a survey of 20 primary care clinicians and lung cancer experts to assess optimal, pragmatic lung cancer screening tools for LCS eligibility and optimal intervention strategies for lung cancer screening; Aim 4b. Conduct a pilot of the LCS intervention with 20 patients to assess comprehension, acceptability, and feasibility in a primary care center in Southwest, GA; Aim 5a. Design and evaluate an intervention to promote lung cancer risk assessment, referral, and screening through a stepped wedge, cluster RCT design in primary care clinics in rural, Southwest Georgia; and Aim 5b. Conduct implementation research on program reach, adoption, implementation, feasibility, appropriateness, and acceptability through surveys and interviews with primary care staff, using the RE-AIM model for sustainability and equity and Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. The Emory CPCRN proposed aims will enhance the capacity of clinical and community organizations in Southwest Georgia and the state through training, research, and dissemination efforts. We will contribute to an understanding of optimal lung cancer screening tools and interventions through scoping and systematic reviews and a model for testing LCS intervention strategies among primary healthcare centers to increasing LCS rates and reduce lung cancer deaths.
