Abstract
ABSTRACT - Professional Development Core Prevailing approaches for training the next generation of researchers in kidney, urologic, and hematologic (KUH) diseases are not sustaining a vibrant and diverse workforce. Consequently, clinical care strategies for patients with KUH diseases have remained stagnant despite rapid technological advances in bioengineering, molecular biology, and genetics. The Northwest COmprehensive Research Training in Kidney, Urologic and Hematologic Sciences (NCOR- KUH) Program will integrate research trainees across KUH disciplines and foster their success in a scientific research career. This Professional Development Core will create an immersive educational environment that will support trainees in the NCOR-KUH Program, the faculty mentors of trainees, and students participating in outreach programs. To address this goal, this Core will create a set of scientific and career development conferences and research resources designed to meet the needs of individual trainees and attain core competencies for success in a biomedical research career. Programs will include integrated KUH conferences, biostatistical consultation, individual coaching in scientific writing and career skills, a small grants program, entrepreneurship training, and opportunities to select elective additional courses in leadership skills. This Professional Development Core will also create a contemporary mentor training program for faculty mentors and a specialized KUH educational series for students and residents engaged in outreach programs to stimulate their interest in a scientific research career. All activities will be hosted on a centralized online platform to provide access to educational resources anywhere at any time.
