Abstract
Modified Project Summary/Abstract Section It takes 17 years for a small fraction of clinical research to be translated into public health practice. To narrow this gap, the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative has emphasized rapid dissemination and implementation (D&I) of interventions to improve the HIV prevention and care continuum. Since the last renewal, the Third Coast Center for AIDS Research (TC CFAR) has become a leader in implementation science, with rapid expansion in implementation research capacity and national reach through multiple initiatives. This work has been critical to shorten the timeline between clinical research and uptake in practice. Building expertise and capacity to disseminate HIV knowledge beyond typical routes (peer-reviewed papers and scientific presentations) is an opportunity to continue motion toward more efficient translation of scientific knowledge to practice. The HIV Dissemination Science and Practice Scientific Working Group (DisSci SWG) has the broad objective of bridging the gap between what is known by HIV scientists and what patients access in practice by improving the dissemination of scientific knowledge. At the 2023 Strategic Planning Retreat and TC CFAR symposium, members of the CFAR identified dissemination science support as one of their top 5 needs. Several members of the TC CFAR have begun to explore DisSci through identifying novel ways to share HIV knowledge with all communities across Chicago. The DisSci SWG intends to build on this desire to improve dissemination through a combination of trainings, seminars, and funding opportunities focused on building knowledge of and opportunities to utilize dissemination science and practice. Further, the DisSci SWG will build a community of practice among TC CFAR members interested in building the skills, confidence, and infrastructure needed to communicate their scholarship outside of the academy. The specific aims of the SWG are to: (1) refine our understanding of dissemination science needs within the TC CFAR, cultivate a community prioritizing dissemination, and support active dissemination of investigatorsâ work in partnership with the Behavioral, Social, and Implementation Sciences Core, Administrative Core, and TC CFAR partner organizations; (2) build dissemination expertise and capacity among TC CFAR HIV researchers and clinical, community, and public health partners; and (3) foster interdisciplinary, cross-institutional collaborations aimed at preparing competitive dissemination science and practice grants to NIH in partnership with the TC CFAR Developmental Core.
