Abstract
ABSTRACT/PROJECT SUMMARY (ADMINISTRATIVE CORE â CORE 1) The Administrative Core provides crucial oversight of the Precision Medicine Center for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), formerly the Center for Gene Therapy for CF. Operating under the guidance of the Centerâs Executive Committee and External Advisory Committee, this Center both performs administrative functions, organizes, and manages scientific enrichment initiatives. From an administrative perspective, the Core ensures financial documentation and accountability for the Centerâs Pilot and Feasibility Program and its Research Cores. It also oversees the external review of the Center as a whole, maintaining transparency and adherence to NIH standards. The Coreâs governance involves three key bodies: The Pilot and Feasibility Committee, which manages decisions about funding for pilot applications based on a minimum of two external reviews; The Executive Committee, which holds the ultimate decision-making authority, passing final judgment on the funding of new pilot applications and the renewal of ongoing pilot projects; and The External Advisory Committee, which together with leadership of the University of Iowa (UI) Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) provides strategic direction and guidance to the Executive Committee. Beyond its administrative duties, the Administrative Core actively enriches CF-related scientific programs. It achieves this through continuous membership and pilot recruitment efforts, and organization of scientific enrichment programs such as seminars, retreats, workshops, and informal working- group meetings. Additionally, it assesses the Research Cores and their services based on investigator questionnaires and external reviews, ensuring efficiency and quality. Finally, the Administrative Core serves as a conduit for research and services, maintaining the Center's website to disseminate information to external investigators and the lay community alike. In summary, the Administrative Core empowers its members to advance CF research and molecular therapies through the following specific aims: 1) Budgetary Oversight: Monitor and manage budgets for the Research Cores and pilot projects to ensure efficient resource allocation and financial accountability; 2) Pilot Program Administration: Monitor and manage budgets for the Research Cores and pilot projects to ensure efficient resource allocation and financial accountability; 3) Membership Management: Coordinate the recruitment of new Center Members and review existing memberships to maintain a dynamic and collaborative research community; 4) Enrichment Program Management: Oversee and coordinate enrichment programs to promote knowledge exchange, networking among Center Members, and the professional development of Center Members. 5) External Review Facilitation: Coordinate and facilitate external reviews of the Center, including gathering feedback, to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement; and Compliance and Reporting: Manage reporting to NIH, ensuring timely and accurate submission of required reports, as well as oversee publication compliance with the NIH public access policy, to promote open access to Center-associated research findings.
