Abstract
Abstract for Administrative Core of 5P30GM154631 grant The Center for Dietary Supplements and Inflammation (CDSI) COBRE, housed within the School of Medicine (SOM) at the University of South Carolina (USC), is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research on dietary supplements and inflammation. The Administrative Core serves as the organizational and operational hub of the Center, tasked with coordinating all programmatic activities to achieve CDSIâs overarching scientific goals. By providing strategic leadership, administrative support, fiscal management, and access to cutting-edge research core facilities, the Administrative Core aims to foster advanced research and collaborations at CDSI. The Administrative Core will focus on the following objectives: 1) Sustainability of Research Cores: Provide administrative leadership to transition the Research Cores into self-sustaining, state-of-the-art facilities capable of supporting research on dietary supplements and inflammation across the university and beyond. 2) Technological Advancement: Continuously update CDSIâs equipment and technology by securing new equipment grants from NIH and VA and recruiting scientists skilled in advanced OMICS technologies. 3) Pilot Project Program (PPP): Oversee the PPP by supporting two types of programs: a) Individual Investigator-Initiated Projects in dietary supplements and inflammation. b) Collaborative Projects involving at least three independent investigators, aiming to secure interdisciplinary NIH Program Project-type funding. 4) Training Programs: Establish a robust biomedical infrastructure training program to equip pre- and postdoctoral researchers and faculty with expertise in advanced OMICS technologies. 5) Interactive Research Environment: Foster collaboration and intellectual exchange through weekly seminars, journal clubs, annual retreats, monthly research presentations, and other formal and informal interactions. 6) Faculty Recruitment: Support departmental and college efforts to recruit new faculty whose research aligns with CDSIâs themes by offering access to cutting-edge Research Core facilities. 7) Operational Oversight: Ensure efficient day-to-day management of CDSI activities in collaboration with the Advisory Committee (AC), which will evaluate progress and guide strategic initiatives. 8) Compliance and Reporting: Maintain compliance with federal guidelines on human subjects, animal welfare, and data management/sharing, while preparing timely and accurate progress reports for the AC and NIH. 9) Website Maintenance: Manage and update the CDSI website to enhance visibility and accessibility. In summary, the Administrative Core is committed to enhancing the research infrastructure, ensuring the sustainability of CDSI, expanding the critical mass of investigators through pilot project support, and providing comprehensive oversight of all CDSI activities.
