Abstract
ABSTRACT: GLNARCH SCEP II This application for funding proposes several new ideas to recruit and support Indigenous students into healing professions. Indigenous student career enhancement opportunities are crucial for fostering a more encompassing and multifaceted workforce. These opportunities not only provide Indigenous students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen fields but also help them navigate the unique challenges they may face due to their cultural background. By offering mentorship, networking opportunities, internships, and access to resources tailored to their needs, these programs can empower Indigenous students to pursue and excel in their desired careers. Moreover, they can help reduce barriers to care and promote greater representation of Indigenous peoples in various industries, contributing to the promotion of health equity and disease prevention for Indigenous communities. This proposal builds upon the success of previously funded GLNARCH Student Career Enhancement Program (SCEP, formerly SDP or Student Development Program) which began in 2003, with the goal of increasing the number of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) students interested in and pursuing careers in medical or health-related career fields. The proposed component updates those best practices and wisdom from past experiences to the new NIH NARCH format. This proposal also introduces a new partnership with the Oneida Nation and UW-Madison and a 4Directions Pathways (east, south, west, and north) student development program.
