Abstract

ASCENT: LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATIVE CORE (LAC) PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The mission of the Advancing the Science of Palliative Care Research Across the Lifespan (ASCENT) Consortium is to develop and support a nationwide palliative care (PC) scientific workforce who will perform innovative, interdisciplinary PC research to improve care for persons with serious illness (PWSI) and their families across the lifespan, including those living with cancer or Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). To achieve this mission requires a complex, innovative, and agile governance structure to meet the goals set out by the ASCENT Consortium and the National Institutes of Health. The Leadership and Administrative Core (LAC) holds the key responsibility for ensuring effective and efficient leadership to govern and integrate all aspects of the ASCENT Consortium. The Specific Aims of the LAC are to: Aim 1: Lead the governance, administration, and integration of all ASCENT Consortium components. Aim 2: Support the generation of high-quality PC research and research methodologies across the lifespan. Aim 3: Build and sustain an infrastructure to: Aim 3a. Support the palliative care community in conducting high-quality research across the lifespan. Aim 3b. Implement strategies to foster engagement with and access to Consortium Cores, activities and resources. Aim 4: Provide the infrastructure to support the dissemination of new PC knowledge to practice settings, the research community, and policy makers to advance the delivery of PC to PWSI and their caregivers. To achieve these aims, the LAC will synergistically integrate the cores and programs of the ASCENT Consortium to support building a community of PC researchers and high-quality, PC research across the lifespan. The LAC will operationalize this integration through 5 hubs: 1. Administration, Regulatory, and Finance, 2. Scientific Consultation & Research Resources, 3. Grants Programs and Training, 4. Lifespan, and 5. Engagement. A highly accomplished investigational and operational team will lead these hubs, collaborating to accomplish the aims of the LAC and ensure success of the overall ASCENT consortium.
