Abstract
Abstract The generation of new ideas, approaches, and areas of inquiry for diabetes, diabetes complications, and related areas of metabolic research is essential to advancement of our understanding and design of new modalities of treatment. An effective mechanism for achieving these goals is to encourage new investigators or established investigators without previous experience in the field to conduct research in diabetes, obesity, and related metabolic disorders. To achieve this goal, we have integrated the Pilot Feasibility (P&F) projects into the fabric of the New York Regional Diabetes Research Center (NYR-DRC). We have successfully executed a P&F component for 42 years and these successes will be enhanced in this renewal period. Previously we funded, on average, a steady state of five P&F projects with maximum budgets of up to $50,000 per year per project, but more typically $35-40,000/year. The majority of these pilot projects were carried out for two years, with the second year of funding dependent on the investigator remaining within the eligibility requirements and also upon progress made during the first year. The previously established and successful model for P&F projects will continue in this renewal with several enhancements to this program instituted in the past funding period. This includes an increase in the number of pilot projects funded in concert with our increased research base and commitment to expansion of our regional efforts with increased Institutional and Core service support. In addition, P&F awardees are automatically full members of the NYR-DRC and will be integrated into all Center activities. Our goal is to foster novel areas of inquiry in diabetes and metabolism research both by supporting individual P&F recipients to become established, funded investigators in the field of diabetes research and to encourage collaborations between investigators as well as between related centers (Centers for Diabetes Translational Research both locally and nationally) and promote new approaches and perspectives for current NYR-DRC investigators.
