Abstract
Although glycans are basic building blocks of life, they have been understudied in research and undertaught in the classroom. The goal of the "National Glycoscience Resource"-CCRC Service and Training (NGlycoR@CCRC) is to make glycoscience widely accessible by offering centralized services, training, and expertise for structural characterization of all biomedical glycoconjugates, including glycoproteins, glycolipids, and polysaccharides to researchers at academic, non-profit, and government institutions, as well as industry, in the United States. Since Sept 2020, research groups around the nation have benefitted from our Service and Training. We have assisted 325 research groups with 3257 analyses providing detailed structural elucidation of glycoconjugates resulting in 64 publications. NGlycoR@CCRCâs easily accessible, unique and comprehensive collection of services, expertise and state-of-the-art MS and NMR facilities specially optimized for glycoconjugate structural characterization are nowhere else found in one laboratory. We will continue to optimize and offer high-demand tailor-made comprehensive services, including isolation and purification, detailed NMR and MS sequencing, and characterization of all glycoconjugates. These services are integrated to help solve problems in glycoscience. In addition, we will offer four customized and well-received hands-on training courses in glycoscience. Our experience has demonstrated that the one-on-one format of our training is extremely effective in achieving widespread use of tools in glycoscience. To expand our reach and train the next generation of glyco-scientists from all levels, we will host two annual free and live âBasic Fundamentals Characterization Coursesâ focused on polysaccharides and glycoproteins respectively. Through extensive dissemination activities, NGlycoR@CCRC will organize workshops in âGlyco in Biotechnologyâ, âGlycoNMR summitâ and âAnalytical Tools for Glycoconjugate Characterizationâ and hold our Glyco-Booth at meetings, give conference seminars, building close relationships with universities, non-profit organizations and industries. We have a combination of state-of-the-art NMR and MS instrumentation, well-trained scientists, and a track record for service and training in carbohydrate structural analysis. We have fully implemented and well-developed protocols for sample receipt, sample handling, sample tracking, storage, data archiving, and reporting with security and analytic outputs of uniform quality and are trusted by scientists throughout the US. NGlycoR@CCRC has become a niche within the scientific community that caters to the critical need for detailed structural characterization of glycoconjugates, and for training the next generation of glyco-scientists. Providing targeted and broad access to advanced infrastructure, expert advice and resources in glycoscience, will ensure that all users will be well supported. NGlycoR@CCRC is poised not only to uphold its status as a vital resource in glycoscience but also to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing needs and challenges of researchers in the field.
