Abstract

Summary: This application proposes to establish the Upstate New York Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in Basic Biology of Aging (Upstate NSC). The Administrative Core will provide the mechanism to plan, evaluate, and manage the Upstate NSC activities. The aims of the Administrative/Program Enrichment Core are to: (1) Provide administrative management of the Upstate NSC. Administrative Core will provide scientific, programmatic, and fiscal leadership. The Administrative Core will also facilitate communication between all researchers, maintain cohesion among the Upstate NSC cores, coordinate and monitor the various activities so that effective use will be made of the available resources, facilitate distribution of samples and reagents, ensure quality control and progress, and meet the administrative and financial requirements of the NIH, the University of Rochester and Cornell University. The Core will also work with institutional officials to leverage established resources to support the Upstate NSC. (2) Manage outreach activities to increase visibility of the Center and effectively transfer data and resources generated by this project to the scientific community. The Administrative Core together with the Development Core will organize and administer undergraduate and graduate courses in Biology of aging and organize summer research experience in biology of aging for undergraduate students. The Administrative Core will function to enhance the visibility of the Upstate NSC by organizing workshops, symposia and conferences; publicizing the activities of the Upstate NSC, maintain the Upstate NSC website and a database for all biological specimens and data, and establish interactions with other NSCs, NSC Coordinating Center, and the community at large. (3) Ensure thorough internal and external evaluation of the Upstate NSC research and service activities to guarantee continued progress. The Administrative Core will form an External Advisory Board, organize the reviews, and provide oversight ensuring that the recommendations of the committee are implemented. The combined functions of the Administrative Core will assure that the individual core units of the proposed Upstate NSC, its internal and external members, and its advisors will cooperate productively to create a structure that is more effective than the sum of its parts. Ultimately, this will maximize the impact of the Upstate NSC on aging research.
