Abstract
Abstract Translation and Application Core The overarching goal of the Translation and Application Core is to provide infrastructure and support for translational aging research within the thematic framework of the WiNSC. This Core will facilitate development of new research by WiNSC investigators and provide the tools necessary for longitudinal assessment of factors and molecular signatures of aging in existing nonhuman primate (NHP) and human data and sample banks at UW-Madison. The Translation and Application Core will foster the development of translational research, working with the Energetics of Longevity Core (Core C) and the Discovery and Integration Core (Core D) to ensure that insights derived from basic biology of aging research can be fully explored, developed, and translated. To accomplish this, we have developed three novel and innovative resources: the NHP Pipeline, the Liquid Biopsy platform, and the Geroscience Accelerator platform. The NHP pipeline will provide the means for validation of insights into the basic biology of aging derived from early pre-clinical studies. We will leverage existing nonhuman primate biobanks in addition to supporting potential prospective studies. The Liquid Biopsy platform will develop tools for mechanistic and translational studies focused on age-related diseases by customizing and optimizing matched biomarkers across species (rodent, NHP, human), facilitating translational and reverse translational research strategies. The Geroscience Accelerator Platform will provide an advanced translational pipeline for validation of insights derived from pre-clinical studies. The goal is to provide necessary resources to facilitate the use of existing human sample biobanks to address questions relevant to the basic biology of aging and to navigate first steps in translation to human studies. In addition, the Translation and Application Core will incorporate the resources and expertise of numerous existing entities on our campus including the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC), the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR), the Translational Science Biocore, multiple relevant imaging cores, the Small Molecule, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, and the Zeeh Pharmaceutical Experiment Station. We will develop and tailor these resources to specifically target questions pertinent to the biology of aging and make them available to aging researchers on campus and nationwide. Led by a multidisciplinary team with the necessary expertise and experience to guide researchers through the translational process, this Core is designed to extend the mechanistic findings that originate from the Energetics of Longevity Core C and the Discovery and Integration Core D toward translational outcomes, accelerating translation and application of novel discoveries for the field.
