Abstract

CORE A: ADMINISTRATION AND PROGRAM ENRICHMENT – SUMMARY This core will be led by Center directors Dr. Marcinek and Dr. Young to provide overall management of the center and coordinate outreach and career development activities. These goals will be accomplished through three specific aims. Aim 1 will provide effective leadership, administration, and management of the center. Leadership activities will set the scientific direction of the center through budget allocation and, organizing and leading external advisory board meetings, and organizing regular meetings of the executive committee comprising the core leaders and Dr. Rabinovitch. Administration will include responsibility for reporting to comply with university and NIH policies and progress reports and budget oversight. Aim 2 will facilitate access to large cohort publicly available databases and provide statistical support for bioinformatic and multi-variate analyses. These activities will include maintaining a database of the available data, help with administrative steps to gain access to data, and appropriate hypothesis formation and experimental design for effective use of epidemiological data. Additional statistical support will provide consulting for experimental design, analyses, and interpretation for pilot awards to enhance rigor and reproducibility of Center affiliated projects. Aim 3 will support outreach activities to enhance geroscience research and career development opportunities. These activities will include organization of the annual George M. Martin Geroscience Symposium, core workshops and training opportunities, and working closely with the Nathan Shock Center Coordinating Center on outreach and dissemination activities to maximize participation by external investigators in Center programs. In addition to the specific training in core technologies Core A will support career development by working with UW programs to recruit early-stage scientists from under-represented groups into aging research and support a local research works in progress meet-up to support junior faculty and those new to geroscience research. Finally, Core A will take the lead in recruiting for two new tenure-track faculty positions in the basic biology of aging in during the next grant cycle.
