Abstract

ADMINISTRATIVE CORE - Abstract The major goal of the Administrative Core is to continue its managerial and organizational support of the proposed renewal Program Project. It will be based in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland (UMD) College Park. The Administrative Core leader, Dr. Pal, will continue to provide scientific leadership, facilitate communication among all members of the P01, ensure dissemination of data and resources with the broader scientific community, manage the financial resources, assure best practices and appropriate compliance with Federal regulations, and facilitate evaluation and progress reports. Organizationally, this Program Project is led by three PIs – Dr. Pal along with Drs. Pedra and Fikrig – who have made contributions to the current state of knowledge in tick biology, including key aspects of their development, immunity, and metabolism. Together, the team has assembled an outstanding Executive Committee, consisting of all three PIs and the Core Leaders, all of whom are nationally and internationally recognized experts in ticks and tick-borne infections. The Executive Committee will continue to provide overall scientific guidance and lead future directions for the Program Project based on the constant exchange of data and information. To ensure continued success of this Program Project, the Administrative Core will rely on the annual recommendations made by an external Scientific Advisory Board. The specific aims of the Administrative Core are as follows: 1) provide scientific leadership and overall vision, 2) support management of fiscal and other resources, 3) assist with communication and dissemination activities, and 4) facilitate evaluations and annual progress reports. The expected role of the Administrative Core is to streamline interactions and perpetuate cohesiveness between the three Projects and the Tick Resources Core to improve our understanding of specific aspects of tick biology, including episodes of development, immunity, and metabolism, that impact the transmission of major tick-borne pathogens. Overall, the Administrative Core will facilitate the dissemination of research outcomes, including much-needed resources and technologies, as well as support outreach to scientific communities and the broader public.
