Abstract

Project Summary: Administrative Core The Administrative Core is aligned to support the overarching goals of the OADRC: (1) to focus on early detection of change in order to define mechanisms supporting healthy brain aging and the transition to MCI and early dementia, with an emphasis on multiple etiology dementia, including both AD and vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), and (2) to facilitate developing effective therapies to prevent or limit these transitions and strategies to support patients and caregivers living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), including in diverse and other historically under-represented research populations. Five overall OADRC specific aims are designed to achieve these goals: SA1) Catalyze and sustain innovative research and discovery in ADRD through an organizational infrastructure supporting a rich collaborative environment composed of leading edge technologies and methods, multi-disciplinary scientists, empowered research volunteers, and an inspired community of lay and professional stakeholders, SA2) Focus the innovation and discovery infrastructure of the center toward specific areas of emphasis, SA3) Provide the necessary materials to support the science through well-characterized research participants, biological specimens, brain tissue, data provision and analytics, SA4) Contribute to the national research commons, and SA5) Provide venues and mechanisms for education and training of new scientists, as well as bidirectional engagement with key stakeholders. The OADRC Administrative Core provides oversight, management and quality assurance for these overarching goals and overall Specific Aims, and all other Center activities. It acts as the lead unit in strengthening and improving links between scientific and appropriate lay community leaders and organizations, locally and nationally. The Administrative Core Specific Aims are to: 1) Coordinate and integrate the individual core units and resources of the OADRC and their interactions with each other, as well as with individual scientists, clinicians, educators and the community; 2) Oversee and monitor directions and interactions of the Center, setting relevant goals and optimizing resource utilization, with a commitment towards enhancing diversity across our research, clinical, and educational pillars; 3) Perform ongoing, regular review of progress to ensure each unit within the OADRC performs to standards of highest quality and productivity while operating in strict compliance with human participants, animal welfare, scientific integrity, and financial policy requirements of the university and NIH; 4) Provide a structure and forum to foster and develop new and innovative research in brain aging ADRD, including administration of Developmental Projects and oversight of REC training; 5) Facilitate collaborative research, scientific interactions, and data sharing transfer with other Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers, the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center, the Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials Consortium, the National Centralized Repository for Alzheimer’s Disease, the ADRC Consortium for Clarity in ADRD Research Through Imaging (CLARiTI), and other relevant research groups.
