The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai prepares future clinician-scientists through a rigorous and integrated dual-degree pathway focused on advancing science, medicine, and healthcare delivery, grounded in a commitment to excellence, innovation, and teamwork. We conduct pioneering research, train physicians and scientists equipped to lead in clinical care and biomedical discovery, and deliver cutting-edge, compassionate careâwith a focus on improving health outcomes across communities. Our program equips students with the scientific and clinical expertise needed to drive medical progress, supported by a culture that emphasizes high standards, strong mentorship, and professional development. Training includes sustained clinical exposure during PhD years and a re-entry course designed to ease the transition back to medical rotations. Students build a solid foundation in research design, critical analysis, and translational science. In parallel, they develop key competencies in communication, leadership, and adaptabilityâessential for success in todayâs scientific and healthcare environments. Through career development workshops, mentoring networks, and individualized support, the MSTP prepares graduates for impactful roles across academia, industry, and healthcare. The program trains approximately 96 students annually, with most completing the dual degree in about eight years. Many secure competitive fellowships, publish influential research, and match into leading residency programs. Over 80% pursue careers that integrate clinical practice and research, with a strong record of NIH funding and leadership in biomedical science. Our recruitment strategy includes partnerships that attract talented applicants from a wide range of experiences and academic paths. Trainees benefit from robust support systems and tailored resources. Faculty mentoring follows structured best practices that promote consistency, accountability, and long-term success. By training physician-scientists who bridge clinical care and research, the MSTP shapes a biomedical workforce prepared to address complex health challenges with both scientific rigor and human understanding.
