Abstract

ABSTRACT- ARMS CORE The Center for Geroscience and Healthy Brain Aging is the overarching program that was created by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as a result of the impressive advances we have made in Geroscience research. The Cellular and Molecular Geroscience CoBRE is an essential part of this university center and is responsible for recruiting new investigators into our program and embedding Geroscience research throughout our campus. The goal of this CoBRE and the larger Center is to expand Geroscience research on the OUHSC campus and throughout Oklahoma into a cohesive program to improve the health of older Americans. The Administration, Recruitment, Mentoring and Statistics (ARMS) Core is the locus and coordinating center for the activities of the Cellular and Molecular Geroscience CoBRE. This Core is essential to ensure that the overall CoBRE program is working efficiently, the goals of the program are being achieved and metrics are recorded. Importantly, the ARMS Core assists in increasing the scientific rigor of all projects through statistical support and data management of projects. Specific administrative activities related to the CoBRE are managed through the ARMS Core and this core ensures that there is effective communication and interactions with other units of the Center for Geroscience and Healthy Brain Aging. Drs. William Sonntag and Veronica Galvan work closely with the administrative staff to ensure that all of the scientific and fiscal activities of the program are closely monitored and that the grant complies with all federal and university guidelines and regulations pertinent to the CoBRE program. The aims of the Phase 2 ARMS Core are to: 1. Provide oversight and administrative services necessary for the successful operation of the Geroscience CoBRE program and integration with related programs of the Center for Geroscience and Healthy Brain Aging. 2. Oversee the mentoring of RPLs and PPLs by senior faculty with an established history of successful mentoring of students, postdoctoral fellows, and young faculty. 3. Coordinate the recruitment of new RPLs and PPLs to replace those who “graduate” from the program, continue to support graduate CoBRE investigators and incorporate these investigators into the goals of the Geroscience CoBRE and the Center for Geroscience. 4. Provide biostatistical support for the RPLs, PPLs and Research Cores that includes research design, data management, and statistical analysis support to ensure rigor and reproducibility of the research.
