This application describes a new, cross-departmental PhD training program in Computational and Systems Biology (CSB) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). The program is designed to equip graduate students with the skills to address biological challenges using integrative and systems approaches, combining high-throughput, quantitative experimentation with sophisticated modeling and multi-modal data analysis techniques. This proposal fills a critical gap in graduate education at Columbia. While systems biology has emerged as one of the most effective frameworks for advancing both basic and translational research, there is a significant unmet demand for well-trained investigators in this burgeoning field. The Columbia systems biology community, established over 20 years ago by faculty with shared interests in gene-regulatory networks and molecular drivers of cellular states, has since expanded significantly. It now includes a wide array of faculty and graduate students working on a broad spectrum of impactful research questions using various techniques. The breadth of academic backgrounds, while a hallmark of the discipline, also presents challenges in graduate education due to varying student pedagogical backgrounds. Building on a foundation of a highly accomplished, well-funded, and dedicated faculty and an exceptional PhD trainee pool, this program aims to enhance interdisciplinary PhD training, promote reproducible research, and foster comprehensive education. The core components of the proposed program include a coherent, rigorous, yet flexible curriculum and extensive skills-based training opportunities tailored to each student's experiences, research interests, and career goals. The outstanding training environment is further supported by an administrative infrastructure that ensures close monitoring of the program's effectiveness through quantifiable metrics, such as student progress, quality of mentoring, and training outcomes. Our ultimate goal is to maximize each trainee's potential and support their development into leaders in the biomedical research workforce, regardless of their specific career paths in academia or industry.
