Abstract
SHARED RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ABSTRACT The UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) oversees six Shared Resources (SRs), which are most essential for basic, clinical, translational, and population science cancer research by Center investigators in support of the JCCC mission, to accelerate discoveries to prevent and cure cancer. JCCC SRs include Biostatistics, Analytical Support, and Evaluation (BASE) SR, Flow Cytometry SR (FCSR), Genomics SR (GSR), Molecular Screening SR (MSSR), Small Animal Imaging SR (SAISR), and the Translational Pathology Core Laboratory (TPCL) SR. JCCC SRs deliver high quality, state-of-the-art technologies and expertise to JCCC researchers engaged in broad spectrum cancer-related studies. The JCCC provides scientific, administrative, and financial support and oversight of SRs to ensure cost-effective, priority access for JCCC investigators to basic, advanced, and cutting-edge equipment and specialized services. Since the 2019 NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) renewal, Zoran Galic, PhD (TII), AD for SRs, has significantly enhanced the management of JCCC SRs. Galic implemented measures for structured oversight, established advisory committees, implemented formal mechanisms to obtain JCCC user feedback, and increased the visibility of SRs within the cancer research community. He organizes a monthly SR Directors Meeting, an every-other-month SR Oversight Committee (SROC) meeting, twice annual Early-Stage Investigators Committee (ESIC) meetings, and he participates in Faculty Advisory Committees (FAC) meetings for each SR. By organizing these and additional management meetings and activities, Galic has been pivotal in aligning SR functions with the strategic goals of the JCCC. Notable achievements during his tenure include facilitating acquisition of >$8.1M of new high-end instrumentation and enhancements to the technological expertise of the SRs. He works to ensure resources are available to meet emergent needs of JCCC investigators by expansion or addition of new SR capabilities and he supports the professional development of SR personnel. By establishing robust and periodically updated management policies and procedures, Galic helps to guarantee that the SRs offer highest quality, cost-effective, JCCC investigator prioritized, and responsive services that meet or exceed the needs of the cancer research community and the strategic objectives of the JCCC. From 2019 â 2023, JCCC SRs provided services to 219 different JCCC investigator laboratories, facilitating 679 cancer-related publications, 42% in high-impact (IF â¥10) journals, and supporting over $305M in total cancer-related extramural research funding. Recognizing the indispensable role of SRs in achieving breakthroughs in cancer research, the JCCC has committed to further enhancing and evolving SR technologies, services, activities, and offerings in its next period 2024 â 2028 Strategic Plan, ensuring that SRs continue to support impactful cancer research and treatment advancements near and long-term.
