Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY – ADMINISTRATIVE CORE The primary goals of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for Translational Chemical Biology (CTCB) are to support junior faculty recruitment and mentorship, mission-critical research cores, and growth of an innovative and broad-reaching interdisciplinary translational chemical biology research community. The Center’s theme intersects chemical biology, molecular pharmacology, and pharmaceutical science. CTCB is unique to, and synergistic with, the University of Kentucky’s (UK’s) biomedical research enterprise that offers a wealth of innovative models and potential new drug targets linked to Appalachian Kentucky health disparities. As such, the Center provides a new unifying framework for faculty to create, leverage, and advance novel chemical probes for the study and control of diverse disease-relevant biology. Within this context, the CTCB Administrative Core will support center communication, coordination, oversight, and integration of all CTCB operations, activities, projects, pilots, recruitment efforts, and research support cores. The Core will provide fiscal management and resource oversight, overall coordination of mentoring and career development activities, resource allocation, data management support and infrastructure, and program evaluation to ensure program effectiveness. The Administrative Core will also facilitate interactions with affiliated UK colleges, programs, and centers to foster synergy and coordination of resources. The Core will facilitate the Center’s engagement of junior faculty and mentors from multiple UK Colleges (including, but not limited to: Agriculture, Food & Environment; Arts and Sciences; Engineering; Medicine; and Pharmacy) to create a vibrant center that seamlessly integrates resources, personnel, and expertise across disciplinary boundaries, and fosters scientific innovation, collaboration, and career development. As new Phase 2 Administrative Core refinements, CTCB will add an experienced Program Associate Director, data management and sharing infrastructure, and a grants development boot camp, as well as streamline mentoring teams, to further refine and enhance overall CTCB support. The Center will also continue rigorous tracking and evaluation in Phase 2 to ensure efficient progress and responsiveness for all components and establish a quantitative cost basis for prospective CTCB core user fees and long-term core sustainability.
