Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY SHARED RESOURCES MANAGEMENT The overall mission of The Jackson Laboratory Cancer Center (JAXCC) is to bring genomic solutions to cancer medicine. Our basic research goal is to tackle the question of âGenetics and Genomics of Aging and Cancerâ, while our translational intent is to contribute new concepts, technologies, and clinical education initiatives originating from basic science to advance precision cancer medicine. One of our Center's Strategic Objectives is Access to Advanced Technologies, wherein we utilize CCSG funds and institutional resources to provide JAXCC members state-of-the-art facilities and advanced technologies to push the frontiers of genetics, genomics, aging, immunology, cancer biology discovery, and pre-clinical models. To this end, the JAXCC has three Shared Resources, Cancer Model Development (CMD), Cancer Model Characterization (CMC), and Cancer Data Analysis (CDA), and robust processes and infrastructure to manage them which are centralized in the Shared Resources Management component. Shared Resources leadership and management personnel work together, and with institutional and JAXCC scientific leadership, to optimize Shared Resources operations, evaluate performance, and ultimately direct the evolution of Shared Resources in line with the needs of JAXCC members. The JAXCC Shared Resources leverage JAX Scientific Services that are managed by JAX for the whole institution, with dedicated full-time personnel and a robust structure for budget management, operations, quality assessment, staffing, capital investment, process and policy development, and user communications. The JAXCC uses this institutional infrastructure for the management of JAXCC-supported Shared Resources. JAXCC Senior Leadership play a key role in institutional Scientific Services governance, serving on leadership committees to ensure the needs of JAXCC members are at the forefront of institutional decision-making and capital investments for the Scientific Services. This overall structure ensures operational efficiency and smooth delivery of services while limiting unnecessary bureaucracy. Critical functions of Shared Resources Management include monitoring and evaluating Shared Resources performance and using that information to plan for resource investments, and providing JAXCC members with access to specialized research technologies, services, and expertise for enhancing their productivity and fostering cancer research discovery. A goal for the next funding period is to further strengthen the ways in which support of JAXCC members by Shared Resources enables innovative and transformative research. Shared Resources Management's Specific Aims are: Aim 1: Provide effective leadership and management of Shared Resources that meets the scientific service needs of JAXCC members; Aim 2: Provide advanced, accessible, and cost-effective Shared Resources and implement effective policies and procedures that govern their use; and Aim 3: Maximize the value of the Shared Resources and plan for future resource needs through active tracking of key performance measures and community engagement.
