Abstract

PROJECT SUMMARY CANCER RESEARCH TRAINING AND EDUCATION COORDINATION CORE The overall mission of The Jackson Laboratory Cancer Center (JAXCC) is to bring genomic solutions to cancer medicine. We continue to develop a culture of scientific discovery, excellence, transdisciplinary research, and collaboration to yield tangible benefits to cancer patients extending beyond the generation of new knowledge. This mission is supported by educational efforts. To this end, the JAXCC successfully launched the Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination (CRTEC) Core during the current grant cycle, creating a multifaceted, collaborative program that supports cancer research training and career development for JAXCC trainees and junior faculty, and external learners. In the next cycle, CRTEC will enhance research and translational education efforts, launch new training programs, and re-invigorate mentor training for JAXCC trainees and faculty. . The goals of the CRTEC Core build upon success achieved during the first five years. Since the launch of CRTEC, its coordination with the Administration (Admin) Core and Leadership, Planning, and Evaluation (LPE), and alignment with Research Program efforts, have allowed CRTEC to have broad impact across the JAXCC and with a wide range of external learners. To achieve our future goals, the CRTEC program proposes the following Specific Aims: Aim 1: Enhance and expand career training and mentoring programs for JAXCC members. Aim 2: Expand our translational cancer education program focused on implementing the use of genomic information in clinical decision-making. Aim 3: Provide education and career development opportunities to external cancer researchers and learners across the span of career stages. The CRTEC team will use our collaborative approach and broad range of programming to enhance the careers of students, trainees, faculty, and staff across the JAXCC, while also providing engaging cancer research training to a broad range of undergraduates, high school teachers, and external trainees and early career faculty.
