Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT â ADMINISTRATIVE CORE The Administrative Core of the Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE) ensures coordinated, efficient, and effective management of all components of the Center, provides essential communication, resources and programs that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration for the advancement of assistant and associate professors in environmental health sciences (EHS), and fosters career development through one-on one mentoring, grantsmanship assistance, and a Scored Grant program that fuels enhanced EHS research grant submissions across the Center. The Administrative Core facilitates expansion and translation of EHS research by its multi-disciplinary members, especially in NIEHS priority areas relevant to the five CHHE Research Interest Groups (RIGs) which are: 1) Behavior and Neuroscience, 2) Genes, Environment, and Precision Health, 3) Health and Airborne Contaminants, 4) Environmental Health Disparities, and 5) Water and Emerging Challenges. The RIGs provide members with an opportunity for leadership experience, and the co-leads are varied in their tenure level, social and teaching perspectives, research disciplines, and university affiliation. NC State (a land-grant university), East Carolina University (ECU, a medical university), and North Carolina Central University (NCCU, an historically black university), are all represented in CHHE leadership. The Administrative Core facilitates communication, funding, and oversight for the other CHHE Cores (Systems Technology, Community Engagement, and Translational Research Support) and programs, which are the roots from which CHHE members grow. Cores provide clinical advice and resources, data analysis support, strong ties to community stakeholders surrounding our affiliated campuses, and high-quality data to Center members. The Administrative Core facilitates communication to and from its membership to provide Center information and receive input on Center/Core services, engagement opportunities, and activities. Through a highly effective, multi-directional CEC, CHHE and the Administrative Core transmit new knowledge to communities and affected populations and receive information from the CEC and the Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB) regarding community concerns and needs. In addition, the Administrative Core has developed a robust career development program that complements the highly competitive Pilot Project Program. Together, they provide foundational funding, mentorship, intellectual support, collaborative interaction, leadership opportunities, and practical training essential for CHHE members to become EHS leaders and compete effectively for extramural research grants, with an emphasis on enhancing the success of assistant professor-level faculty. Through these various efforts, the Admin Core provides the resources and infrastructure that enhances the research impact and capacity of Center members beyond what they could have achieved on their own and remains a vehicle for multi-directional communication within and between its internal and external stakeholders.
