Abstract

Summary/Abstract Section -Administrative Core The Administrative Core (Admin Core) represents the leadership and glue that ensures coordination of activities for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Digestive Disease Research Core Center (DDRCC) to advance basic, translational and clinical research focused on digestive and liver disease. The Admin Core has been extremely active during the first four years of the Award, providing leadership that sets the strategic priorities for the Center. These four years have seen the seamless integration our Biomedical Research Cores, the development of a robust and competitive peer-reviewed Pilot & Feasibility (P&F) Program supporting primarily new investigators in digestive diseases research at MUSC, and a popular and highly effective Enrichment Program that has hosted renowned clinical and basic investigators and been extremely active in communication of Center activities. Through highly robust operational leadership and support, the Admin Core connects our Center members to the digestive disease research community at large to promote its overarching goal of better understanding digestive and liver disease and improving therapeutic options for affected patients. These efforts are channeled through the following Specific Aims: 1) Provide leadership & accountability. The Admin Core operates via an integrated and multilevel leadership structure and sets strategic priorities, leads biomedical research core enhancement and prioritization, implements and oversees enrichment activities, participates in peer review and prioritization of the P&F Program, and makes recommendations for the allocation of key assets. 2) Foster collaborations & scientific opportunities. Through its extensive communication, research support, and nurturing efforts, the Admin Core has and will continue to foster the growth of the Center – in particular, its junior members. Additionally, we will continue to be active in the further development and implementation of the DDRCC Eastern Alliance which will provide additional key opportunities for member networking on the national stage. 3) Enhance membership growth & synergy. The Admin Core will focus both on the recruitment and development of new junior faculty, and the support of existing faculty who have sharpened the focus of their thematically-aligned and successfully funded research on digestive disease. Going forward, the Admin Core leadership will continue to work to enhance the recruitment of additional digestive and liver disease researchers at all levels to MUSC. 4) Ensure robust ongoing Center evaluation. The Admin Core will continuously evaluate all aspects of the Center and its operation to strengthen the MUSC DDRCC. Member responses during our annual evaluation of all DDRCC components and the Biomedical Research Cores will be aggregated, reviewed and acted upon.
