Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT: ALTERATION AND RENOVATION The proposed Balance and Auditory Research Center (BARC) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is designed to build a critical mass of independent investigators to develop effective diagnostic and therapeutics for balance and auditory disorders. Building on existing programs, BARCâs overall goal is to employ and expand innovative molecular, cellular, and physiological approaches to the study of balance and hearing to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic breakthroughs and provide advanced training and mentorship opportunities for students, residents, and junior faculty. One of BARCâs research cores, the Neurophysiology Research Core, often referred to as âCore C,â will require alterations and renovations. The scope of work includes the addition of walls inside of R618 to create two rooms (with the third area of focus residing in R618-01) and a walkway around them. Because of the type of work that will be conducted, temperatures and sunlight will need to be controlled. The newly renovated space will significantly increase Core C capacity to provide the auditory/vestibular functional test services to investigators inside and outside of the BARC. Specific aims for the alteration and renovation of UMMCâs R618 for development of BARCâs Core C include the following: (1) finalize plans and receive necessary approvals from UMMC to demolish certain facilities within UMMCâs R618 and construct new facilities in the same space to safely and effectively accommodate Core C its initiatives; (2) complete alterations and renovations of UMMCâs R618, including renovations of its ceiling and relevant interior elevations, within one year of funding; and (3) coordinate efforts with the directors of both Core C and the Administrative Core to assure that all alterations and renovations are satisfactory and accommodate the needs of CORE C initiatives. Heading up the proposed alterations and renovations is Amy Trim, PLLC, who has a long history with UMMC, renovating space on UMMCâs campus for similar projects. Ms. Trim earned her Bachelorâs degree in Architecture and Master of Design degree from Auburn University, and interned with Miner Feinstein Architects, LLC in Frederick, Maryland. She holds an active license (#5565) with the Mississippi Board of Architecture, and has focused her work on hospitals and health care facilities since 2016.
