Abstract
Modified Project Summary/Abstract Section Trauma is a critical and costly public health problem that accounts for 28% of all psychiatric disorders and increases risk for myriad adverse health and social consequences throughout the lifespan. Rural, low-income and medically underserved populations experience the highest levels of risk. Dissemination and implementation science (DIS) aims to close the research-to-practice gap by addressing barriers to accessing health-related services and improving health outcomes. The primary goals of DIS include development and testing of novel approaches to improve access and quality of interventions while also addressing inconsistencies in healthcare utilization and individual- and systems-level factors that influence access and quality of health care. The South Carolina Building Resilience through innovative Interventions to promote Growth & Health after Trauma (BRIGHT) COBRE Dissemination and Implementation Science (DIS) Core will promote and sustain development of a pool of outstanding early-stage investigators (COBRE Research Project Leaders â RPLs) with high likelihood of achieving extramural research funding to make impactful contributions to the fields of traumatic stress and adversity, with an emphasis on research that will address the needs of medically overlooked populations. In close collaboration with the other BRIGHT Center Cores, the DIS Core Specific Aims will be achieved by integrating the principles of DIS to address the training and research priorities of the RPLs and other BRIGHT Center-affiliated investigators, supporting new pilot projects, and promoting timely translation and targeted dissemination of data and resources. Specific aims of the DIS Core are to: (1) Provide expert technical assistance and consultation, training, and collaboration in DIS related to the full spectrum of DIS, particularly as it relates to traumatic stress research, from crafting DIS-related trauma research questions and hypotheses to testing novel implementation approaches and analyzing and disseminating key findings; (2) Provide training and resources to RPLs and other BRIGHT Investigators to support dissemination of key findings, messaging, commercialization, and entrepreneurship. This includes resources to create materials to share research findings with the traumatic stress scientific community and to communicate/amplify findings for a lay audience and provide linkages to existing resources for commercialization and entrepreneurship activities; and (3) Leverage existing internal and external DIS resources for all BRIGHT Investigators, develop new resources to fill gaps and support RPLsâ growth, and maintain state-of-the-art knowledge, capabilities, and business operations for the Core. The DIS Core will serve as an important and integral component of BRIGHT, helping to advance research in the traumatic stress field by providing expertise, consultation, training, and resources that capitalize on innovative DIS methods to reduce differences in health outcomes for all traumatic stress populations.
