Abstract
PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT â SHARED RESOURCE MANAGEMENT The FCCC Shared Resource Management (SRM) team provides essential administrative oversight and support of FCCC Shared Resources (SRs). Centralizing SRs provides FCCC members with cost-effective access to expertise, cutting-edge instrumentation, and new methods. SRM provides experienced administrative leadership and operational policies to execute the following aims: 1) ensure all SRs deliver quality and cost-effective services to FCCC members, 2) provide staffing, training, equipment, and space required for SRs to perform cutting-edge service, 3) carry out thorough annual review of the SRs to meet the research needs of FCCC members, 4) provide Senior Leaders with recommendations for investments and improvement of SRs and 5) assure that SRs keep pace with technological advancements and outsourcing opportunities. To achieve these aims, each SR is advised by a Facility Advisory Committee (FAC), which reports their deliberations, including responses from user surveys, to the governing Facility Parent Oversight Committee (FPOC) consisting of senior faculty. The FPOC then conveys its recommendations to the Chief Scientific Officer and Cancer Center Director, who make policy and operational decisions that are implemented through the Associate Director for Administration and the Shared Resources Administrator. This process has been utilized by the SRM team to steward the institutional investment of $7.5M for new equipment, $3.1M for renovations to improve the 11 CCSG SRs, and $17.9M to support the operations of 11 SRs from 2019-2023. Several recommendations were implemented that have improved SR functioning, including changing the leadership of three SRs and demoting one poorly performing SR (the Genomics Facility; GF) to âdevelopingâ status, while it is reorganized. These investments support all five scientific priorities and the Innovation and Discovery Pillars of the FCCC Strategic Plan, as exemplified by successful efforts by the Biosample Repository Facility (BRF) to diversify its biosample collection by accruing racially/ethnically diverse biospecimens from the portion of the catchment area adjacent to the Health Sciences Campus. FCCC is requesting operating support for 11 established SRs: Biological Imaging Facility (BIF), Biosample Repository (BRF), Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Facility (BBF), Cell Culture Facility (CCF), Cell Sorting Facility (CSF), High Throughput Screening Facility (HTSF), Histopathology Facility (HF), Laboratory Animal Facility (LAF), Molecular Modeling Facility (MMF), Population Studies Facility (PSF) and Transgenic Mouse Facility (TMF). The SRM facilitated the use of these 11 SRs by 91% of FCCC members across all three Research Programs, and enabled these SR to support 594 cancer-related publications, of which 143 (24.1%) are in high impact journals from 2019-2023. Future plans include: 1) restoration of the GF as a full SR; 2) expand Inter-Cancer Center Sharing of Shared Resources 3) increasing SR usage by FCCC members from all three campuses, 4) assuring rigorous oversight of SR functioning through active management of FAC and FPOC membership, and 5) providing training opportunities for Master's students at Temple University.
