Abstract
COMMUNITY BASED PARTICPATORY RESEARCH CORE PROJECT SUMMARY The Community Based Participatory Research Core provides CBPR training and mentoring to participants in the AK INBRE 5 and RAIN networks, as well as to community-based stakeholders who can advocate for biomedical research to address their community priorities. The Community Based Participatory Research Core will add a significant effort to respectfully and meaningfully cultivating CBPR aligned biomedical research and is proposed due to both an increasing need for CBPR training and mentorship in the AK INBRE network, as well as the lack of a state-wide resource on CBPR. The Community Based Participatory Research Core is a vital component of the AK INBRE 5âs goals to build a biomedical research workforce by providing career development and networking opportunities to faculty, investigators, and students within the AK INBRE 5 and RAIN networks, and expansion of training and mentorship opportunities to students. The Community Based Participatory Research Core will offer training on CBPR principles and best practices, including an innovative case study curriculum, to investigators, researchers, and students in the AK INBRE 5 and RAIN networks. One-on-one mentorship to support the development and implementation of CBPR aligned projects will be available through the Community Based Participatory Research Core. The Community Based Participatory Research Core will also recruit, hire, and train community research navigators to offer personalized guidance and mentorship on the development and implementation of CBPR aligned projects. The principles of CBPR include attention to alleviating the power differentials between academics and community members, and the core will not only train academics on approaching community members to engage in research but also support key community stakeholders to realize their own capacity and power in the research process. Training to better understand and engage with biomedical researchers on community priorities will be offered to the community research navigators, community-based research assistants within the AK INBRE 5 network, and other key community stakeholders. These Community Based Participatory Research Core activities promote health in AK communities by engaging in biomedical research that broadens the reach of AK INBRE 5 to positively impact Alaska and the nation. The Community Based Participatory Research Core will increase the impact of AK INBRE 5 in Alaska, as well as strengthen the INBRE and RAIN networks through new and revitalized partnerships.
